The first is based on the 1997-98 kit, which was white with a red diagonal, and was inspired by the clubs 50th season since foundation. The second is all white, and the third is all red. On the first, the sponsor is reduced in size and the reebok logos are on the sleeves, in order to fit the design.

From the city of Santa Cruz in Bolivia, the team of Club Social Cultural y Deportivo Blooming (named in honour of the citys youth and founded in 1946) are one of Bolivias biggest clubs, and play in a pretty nice colour combination - Sky blue, navy and white, which is what Ive plumped for here.

The team have won the Bolivian Championship 15 times, the last success was in the 2009 Clausura.

Blooming have used pinstripes in the past, and here they are horizontal on the home kit, which has a vertical blue band on which the umbro logo and the crest of the club sit. All the kits here have just two sponsors, instead of the multitude on the current kits.

On the inside of the collar is the teams nickname, la Academica, in referance to the Tahuichi Aguilera Academy which is located in Santa Cruz

The away is in white, with a sky blue band with navy border on the shirt, and the Third is in navy with a sky blue chestband with a white border.

Portland Timbers

The Portland timbers were one of the biggest teams in the old NASL, and a new incarnation is joining the MLS in 2011. These are my ideas for a new kit for the team.

The timbers are joining the MLS in 2011, and have to give up their nike sponsor, its going to be strange seeing them in an adidas kit, as Portland is the HQ of Nike and the current sponsor of the ULS team.Here is my take on the home and the away Timbers kits.For the home Ive used the green and yellow from the kit on the shirt, with the yellow pinstripes, and the motif is on the socks, with white sock turnovers, shorts, shirt bottom, collars and cuffs for contrast with the green. The change is in white, with a green and yellow chest band, and a green V neck and matching cuffs.

The socks and shorts are interchangeable with the home kit.The flag on the back is that of Portland. The Alaska Airlines logo is left of as its a Seattle based company, and the timbers logotype is on front, taken off the new crest. The new crest is used on the shirt, without the lettering, and on the sock overturn is the axe motif.

The third kit is in yellow with two green chest bands.

The teams colours are gold and black, and this is the colour scheme that I have chosen. The shirts have the Amakhosi 4 life statements on them, either on the inside of the collar or on the back of the shirt. The home has a black chestband on the shirt, and shadow stripes on the shirt.

The away kit has a Black chest band, and gold pinstripes on the body. The socks repeat the colour scheme.

From west London, Fulham have a long history, but have often been in the shadow of other London clubs, in the 1950s, the club had one of the greatest players in English football history, Johnny Haynes on its books, but success was elusive. The club reached the FA cup final in 1975, only to lose to West Ham. The team then suffered a decline in fortunes, and finished 17th in the fourth tier of English football in 1994. Three years later, Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed brought the club, and with his millions, reached the top flight of English football in 2001. The Cottagers have since established themselves as a top flight team, and reached the final of the UEFA cup/europa cup in 2010, losing in the final to Atletico Madrid.

All the kits here have a new Crest, designed by steevo. The lettering is used on the kits, with the full crest on the inside of the collar.

The home has the hooped socks of the 1933-39 kit, and is inspired by the adidas kits of the late 90s too. The kit has a back panel across the shoulders where the name is printed.

The away kits are in red and black, the traditional change colours of the side. One has the stripes, the other is inspired by the 1997-98 change kit.

The third is in yellow, and has a similar design to the home, with a different collar and a different back panel, which is on the front of the shirt as well.

Known as the lion of the Island, Avai were named after a victory for the Brazilian forces in the war of the Triple Aliance, the battle of Avahy. In time, the name was changed to Avaí Futebol Clube, after the Brazilian pronounciation of the battle. The club first played in the top flight of Brazilian football in the years 1974, 1976 and 1977 but have begun to establish themselves in the top tier of brazilian football in recent years, finishing in a very respectable 6th place, qualifying for the Copa Sudamerica.

These kits are in the traditional colours of blue and white, and all have the original logo of Avai on the inside of the collar, and above that the teams nickname, Lion of the Island. On the back of the shirt and sock turnover is the AFC lettering from the original logo, and on the back of the shirt at the bottom is an outline of Santa Catarina Island, on which the city of Florianopolis is located. On the back is the name of the clubs most famous supporter, and a great tennis player, Gustavo Kuerten.

Named after the Arabic word for hope, Raja are one of Africa's pre eminent clubs, and won the African Champions cup in 1989, a year after the first league title. The first shirt is green and white striped, the team have played in both plain white and green striped shirts over the years. One feature is that the green stripes have a paint effect, with a watercolour style finish, using 6 shades and hues of green in the design. The crest is an old one, the latest crest is an eyesore.

The change shirt has the same painted effect, but with a single stripe on the chest. The all green third is pretty conventional.

On the inside of the collar the wording "Vox Populi" is present. This is one of the clubs nicknames (The peoples voice), given after the foundation by Moroccan nationalists in 1949.

The sponsor on all the is a logistics company, with the logo greyscaled from red and blue (red the colour of rivals WAC)

Known as La Bestia Negra (the dark beast), and two times Copa Libertadores champions and the only team to win the triple crown of State Championship, Brazilian Cup and Brazilian Championship, Cruzeiro are one of the biggest names in Brazilian football. The team were forced to change their name from Palestra Italia during the second would war, and took the name Cruzeiro after the southern cross, the new symbol for the club.

Cruzeiro mostly play in rather subdued shirts, so i have followed this, and the home is pretty much a modern interpretation of the kits of the 70s.

The home shirt is pretty much classic Cruzeiro, with contrasting cuffs, shirt bottom and collar. On the back of the shirt, on the back panel, is the triple crown to commemorate the 2003 season. On the inside of the collar is a representation of Raposao, the clubs mascot. The shorts and socks style is the same as I have used for a number of Reebok teams.

The club crest is the one used on the current shirts, the southern cross, as was voted by the fans of the team, over the more elaborate crest with the wording and the triple crown .

Fortaleza

One of the biggest teams from the Northeast of Brazil, Fortaleza play in a tricolour of Blue, white and red horizontal stripes, and are nicknamed Leao, and are also known as the Steel Tricolour (that nickname is at the bottom of both the pictures here)

Both the kits here have a crest designed by designed by hekula.blogspot.com/.../fortaleza-especial.html . I was looking at his great designs, and the Fortaleza Crest stood out, the outline of a fortress as a great feature. The current crest of Fortaleza is Based on the crest of Sao Paulo and is pretty generic and the colours dont have any special meaning unlike the tricolour of Sao Paulo, so this new crest represents the city far better, and the club too.

On the back of the collar of each of the shirts is the flag of Fortaleza, with the coat of arms with the word "fortitude" and this was the reason I placed it on the shirt

The home is in usual red, blue and white, and the away is white with the blue and red stripes. One feature of note is the two watermarks of a lions head, one on the back and another on the front of the shirt, with the crest on top, as on the 2009-10 Sunderland shirt, Glentoran change and Santa Fe kits that Umbro designed, and that was one of my favourite features on the shirt, pretty original and makes the badge look bigger on the shirt. In the case of Santa Fe, the outline enlivens the crest a great deal.

Bolton Wanderers

Most of the recent kits for Bolton have been pretty poor and regarded as some of the worst in English football, so the home is a reaction against that. The shirt is also all white, which is something that Bolton have not had in a long time.

From the mining town of Calama in the Atacama desert, and backed by the none too shabby wedge of the Chilean mining industry, this team has won the Chilean league 8 times and starred in two copa libertadores finals since foundation in 1977.The home kit is in orange, a pretty bright shade, and with white trim. There is a shadow V on the front of the shirt.

The away is all white, with an orange band on the front of the shirt.The wording "Zorros del desierto" (Foxes of the Desert) appears on the inside of the collar and at the bottom. This kit is based on the First change worn by Cobreloa, but with a Diagonal band instead of a Vertical one.

Queens park Rangers

Based in West London, Queens Park Rangers were formed in 1882, and joined the third tier of English football in 1920, and four years later the club adopted the blue and white hoops the team is famous for. Before that, the team turned out in green and white hoops.

The kits here are inspired by the adidas kits of the 80's, an era that the was in the top tier of English football, and reached the FA cup final in 1982. The design is with lotto, a company that the Hoops have been with for three seasons, and have made some good kits, but with the same problem most lotto kits have - huge red lotto logos on the sleeves, and incongruous logos on the shirt front and shorts. These just have the one lotto logo on the shirt, socks and shorts. Just like the kits from that Era, the sleeves on the home are mostly white, but I have added hooped socks, a feature from an earlier time.

The home and away are classic QPR, while the third is in all white. The current sponsor is on all the kits, the Airline Gulf Air

The most successful club in Mexico, and the best supported, Deportivo Guadalajara have won the Mexican Championship 11 times, and are known as Chivas (Goats) The nickname was originally an insult, however over time it became both a badge of honour and the nickname of the club, and are most often referred to by that name. The used to share the Estadio Jalisco with Atlas, but now play in the Omnilife stadium, whose design was inspired by a clouded Volcano.

Chivas share a bitter rivalry with capital side Club America, in the biggest game of the Mexican league season. The team have a policy of fielding Mexican nationals only, and are owned by the Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara, also owner of Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica and Deportivo Chivas USA, the sister club of Chivas.

For most of the history of Chivas, the home shirt has been red and white vertical striped shirts with a red collar, and blue shorts, with the away kit all white with red collars and cuffs. This has changed in a big way in recent times, and there have been some extraordinary kits, some that have alienated the fans of the sacred flock, with home kits that have large amounts of blue on the shirt, and with the stripes distorted from the simple red and white vertical stripes.

The away kits of recent years have been controversial, in particular the yellow and white striped kit with a black back panel, and in orange and grey. Based on the coat of arms of Guadalajaara, the crest of the club has stayed the same for decades with only slight modifications. In 2009, a new crest was introduced, much simpler than the crest it replaced. Immediately the fans started a campaign to force the directors of Chivas to bring back the old crest, and this was successful. I have used the classic crest on all the shirts here.

All the kits here have the club crest used in the early days of Chivas on the back of the shirt, under the collar. The home kits here are in simple red and white stripes, one has a V neck, the other two have baseball style collars.

The blue away kits here have a red and white diagonal stripe on them, with one having contrasting cuffs and collar, and the other non contrasting cuffs

The white away kit is pretty simple.

Boca Juniors

28 times champions of Argentina, winners of the Copa Libertadores 6 times, Boca Juniors are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and play in the iconic strip of Blue with a Gold band, and though the shades have changed, the team has always played in these colours, ever since the team lost against another team who played in black and white stripes, and as a result took the colours of the next ship to come into the port of La Boca in Buenos Aires, which was the Drowing Sophia. The ship was Swedish, and Boca have played in blue and gold since.

The Home and away shirts here are in the shade of blue and gold I think is the best looking, and on both, the stripe has a kink on the right hand side of the shirt. On the inside of the collar is the inscription "desde 1905" and the four stars boca crest.

For the white third, this has the gold band bounded with the blue.

All the shirts here use a modified version of the crest used on the 105 years kit, and the LG logo is blue or gold, not the same colours as river plate.

Dynamo Moskva

From the Russian capital, Dynamo Moskva were one of the Soviet Unions top sides, and were the team of the secret police. The team won 11 league titles, and 6 soviet cups. Their best known player was Lev Yashin, possibly the greatest goalkeeper of all time and known as the black panther.

From the State of Parana in Brazil, Coritiba (named after the old name of the city they are based in, and the oldest in the city) are the 33 times winners of the Parana state championship, and won the Brazilian championship in 1985. Coritiba are saw as the team of the Working class in Curitiba, with rivals Atletico Paranaense seen as the team of the upper and middle class. The nickname of the team is Coxa Branca (white thigh), after the colour of the German immigrants thighs who formed the team.

Coritiba play in white shirts with two green bands, the same colour as the Parana state flag. On the kit here, this goes all around the shirt, with one version with the club crest imprinted on it, and the other has the badge over the heart. The shorts are black with a white panel, to represent the teams nickname. For a little something extra, the Parana state flag is on the back of the shirt above the teams main sponsor

The second version just has the band on the front. The third kit here has the original CFC logo, and different trim on the shirt

From the district of Morumbi in São Paulo, São Paulo Futebol Clube are the six times winners of the Brazilian Championship, and reached three consectutive finals of the copa libertadores with one of the greatest teams in Brazilian football history, with the likes of Juninho Paulista, Rai and Tele. the team won the double of the Copa Libertadores and world club cup, beating Newells old boys and Barcelona in 1992, and Universidad Catolica and the great Milan team in Tokyo in 1993.

the team lost the 1994 final to Velez Sarsfield, but almost a decade later, the team became champions of South America and the world in 2006, beating Atletico Paranaense in the final of the copa libertadores. the team has won 21 Sao Paulo State Championships too.

The kit here is pretty classic Sao Paulo, with the red and black hoop unbroken on the shirt, and on the back is the flag of the City of Sao Paulo. The LG sponsor is on the back of the shirt and front of the shorts only (a major dislike for me is the placing of the LG logo on the front for the current SP kits), and Fast Shop logo is on the front of the shirt opposite the reebok logo.

On the inside of the collar is the SP saint mascot, and the inscription Tricolor do Morumbi

Cerro Porteño

Based in Barrio Obrero in the Paraguayan capital Ascuncion , Cerro Porteno are one of the big two in Paraguayan football, and have a fierce rivalry with Olimpia. The team are named after a paraguayan battle victory, and are known as El Club del Pueblo as most of the support comes from the lower classes, as opposed to Olimpia, the club of the elite in Paraguay. Honours wise, the team has won the paraguayan championship 28 times.

the Colours were chosen as red and blue, as the colours of the two leading parties in the country, and white was added later to complete the paraguayan flag

the kits here are in the traditional colours for El Ciclon, and both have an older style simplified crest instead of the full shield, and the flag of Paraguay on the back of both the shirts.

Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata

Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (La Plata Gymnastics and fencing club) are the oldest existing football club in south America, and one that plays in some of the best colours and one of the best styles in the Business, white with a blue band. The home kit is that classic colour combination, and its a pretty straightforward shirt, with the inscription El Lobo Del bosque ("Wolf of the forest" the forest being the ground in which the team plays, Juan Carlos Zerillo Stadium) on the inside of the collar. Two sets of designs here, one with contrasting cuffs and collar, and one set with non contrasting cuffs and collar. On the inside of the collar is the first crest for Gimnasia La Plata.

There are a few earlier designs too. The number is for teams that play in two colours, with a band around the shirt. This design is more visible and more attractive than the usual alternatives, such as different colour numbers or a broad stroke around the numbers.

Corinthians Paulista

Known as Timao (the grand team), Sport club Corinthians Paulista are one of Brazils biggest teams, and one of the best supported. Named after an English ameteur side in 1910, the team went on to win the Sao Paulo state championship four years later, and have won that trophy a record 26 times. The team has also won the Brazilian championship 4 times and the brazilian cup three times. The team is hugely supported in the state of Sao Paulo (16 million), and in 1975 in a Brazilian Championship match against Fluminense, the biggest movement of population in peacetime (70000) went to watch the game at the Maracana. The team of the 80s also helped to bring down the dictatorship in Brazil, by placing the slogan "vote on the 15th" in 1982 to motivate people to vote in the november elections that brought to an end the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil.

for the shirts here, I ve used pinstipes, narrow on the home and wide on the away, as its one of the details that sets the Corinthians shirt apart. The design of the shirt has the BRF logo on the front (the parent company of past sponsors Batavo), as I am not a fan of the Batavo logo. the pinstripes on the shirts are part of the teams heritage, narrow for the home, and for the away, broader than on recent kits, influcenced by the kits of the 1960s. Above the secondary sponsor, the original CP logo is present.

On the inside of the collar is the nickname Todo Poderoso (The Almighty)

Based in the upper and middle class district of Rio de Janeiro called Laranjeiras, Fluminense Football club (named after the old term for a native of Rio) are one of Brazils biggest sports clubs. The football team has won the Rio state championship 30 times, the Brazilian championship once and reached the final of the copa libertadores in 2008, losing to LDU Quito in a thrilling final. Like their rivals Botafogo, Vasco da Gama and Flamengo (their biggest rival, and with whom the team contest Fla - Flu) they play at their own stadium, but for big games its the cathedral of football known as the Estádio do Maracanã

Colour wise, Flu's kits are unique. maroon and green with narrower white stripes separating them, and these are pretty striking. it also means that kits tend to look really busy with the sponsors, for these, I have used stroke on them to make them stand out instead of panels. On all the kits here, the word Fluzao is on the inside of the collars

For the home, I have kept the sleeves maroon, and made the three stripes on the shirt more inline with the white stripes on the shirt. It was inspired by the kit from the 2003-2004 season, a fave of mine (photo at bottom) . There is no sleeve sponsorship, as I feel it is not nessessary with the unimed logo on the front and back of the shirts

The away was inspired by an old kit from the 40s (photo at bottom). This has the maroon and green band across the shirt, and with the crest over the heart on the shirt instead of over the bands.

Given that the home has more maroon on the shirt than green, a third is not needed, but I made it anyway, as Flu have worn maroon third kits for some time now. It has an old style grandad collar (which the second had before modification) and green and white side panels.

Hull City

From the East Yorkshire city of Kingston Upon Hull in England, Hull City for years were in the fourth tier of English football fighting for survival, with a rundown stadium and in a city with two of the powerhouses of Rugby league (Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC), but then the team started to climb the ladder and in 2008, the team reached the premiership for the first time in its history. They suprised everyone by staying there the following season, surviving by a single point.

Hulls traditional colours are unique in English football, a shade of almost orange like amber and black, with white as a third colour and for the shorts too. Plain shirts or stripes are the style the team has played in, but they have not shyed away from experimentation, with some frankly horrific results, such as these horrors from the early 90s

and here is what I would consider to be the best hull shirt, a standard template, but this was worn in that historic 2007-08 season

For the fantasy shirts, I have made tow home shirts and an away shirt, the crest was made by fellow Design football denizen Steevo (I used it for the reason that it fits the design used on the home and away kits better than the current badge) and on the back of the shirts and the socks of all three I have placed the humber suspension bridge and crown on the shorts which was a part of the club crest used in the mid 90s.

For the first, this one is in stripes. for the alt home kit (Hull are the only side in English football to have registered an all black kit as the home, in 1909, and for the second kit, this is white with an amber and black band, all around the shirt (this is almost unheard of in Engish football) the sponsor has been shrunk and resized (the main sponsor is a part of Kingston Telecommunications, the phone and internet supplier of the city of Hull

Tottenham Hotspur

Known as the Eagles, Club América were formed on the day of the Americas in 1916, and after winning two games and drawing one of three challenge Matches, were accepted into the league of Mexico City. The team call the giant Azteca Staduim their home.

Since then, the team have won 10 Pro Mexican League titles, the Mexican cup five times and in international competition, the team has won the CONCAF Champions cup 5 times.

The home and away shirts are influenced by several Aguilas jerseys, the ones from the early 80s and the 2007-08 shirt with the eagle feather print, the detail on the sleeves is intended as an abstract representation of the feathers, and the detail above the chevron the suns rays. For the kits here, I wanted them to be bold, and imposing, hence the chevron design. There are alternate versions of the Home and away, with the bottom stripe taken off the bottom

The third is in white and a different template, on the back above the hem there is a fabric pattern on the shirts.

Palmeiras

Known as Verdao (great green), Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras are one of Brazils biggest sides, having won the Paulista State Championship 22 times, and having bagged the Brazilian championship 4 times, and the taca Brasil, the competitions forerunner, in 1960 and 1967. The team also won the copa Libertadores in 1999

For the kits here, I just decided to use the traditional Green and white colours, with the shade of green the one used by Verdao Traditionally. The home is influced by one of the templates that was used at the 1998 world cup with modern touches, and the away is a design influenced by the modern designs used up nike and umbro, and this might be what one would look like if adidas made that kind of shirt.

On the front of the kit and back of the shorts, I used the Pirelli sponsor, and on the back the current samsung sponsor, above that is an older badge used by the club. On the inside of the collar on both the shirts, there is the original crest used by Palestra Italia, the former name for Verdao before the outbreak of the second world war and the entry of Brazil forced a name change.

I did not make a third kit, as the big greens blue third is pretty stunning, the best use of the "Sportsbra template" in my view

Flamengo

Deportivo Independiente Medellin

Known as El Poderoso de la Montaña (powerful of the Mountain), DIM are one of the major players in the Colombian premier league, and won their fifth title last year. The foundation of the club occurred in the year 1913. The team share a fierce rivalry with fellow Medellin club Atletico Nacional.

For the two kits here, I wanted them to look in your face and agressive, so I used a bright shde of blue, and the home has collarbone trim and fluid looking side panels. The away is all white with a red and blue chestband.

Universidad Catolica

Traditionally the team of the middle and upper classes in Chile, based in the Las Condes district of Santiago, Universidad Catolica are one of the big three in Chile, and contest the "Clásico Universitario" with Universidad de Chile. The other fierce rivalry is with Colo - Colo. The team have won the league title 9 times, and the high watermark for international competition was the 1993 copa libertadores final, which they lost to Sao Paulo.

The teams uniforn consists of a white shirt with the classic shade of blue for the shorts and for the single all round chest band. For the home, I went for a retro look, with the all around hoop on the shirt and the crest of the club on the band. The new cristal logo is not as well suited to the shirt as the old one, so it has to be smaller to allow the crest onto the shirt band.

for the away, I used a different collar type and based to template on the new puma shirts. The white chest band does not extend all round the shirt, and on the left hand side of the shirt, there is a fine watermark stiped pattern

and to finish, heres a picture of my favourite U jersey, I like the collars and the design of the cuffs, and for a nineties shirt this looks really classy

Bolivar

Bolivar hail from the city of La Paz, the worlds highest capital, are named after Simon Bolivar, who helped much of south America independance and whom Bolivia itself its named after. The other major club in the city its The Strongest, with whom Bolivar contest the worlds highest classico. The team colours are Blue, with a light shade used for the main colour and a darker one for the second. The team are one of the leading clubs in their home country, winning 28 Domestic championships. The two Home shirts here are both in the classic colours, and one has a diagonal stripe, and the other has a horizonal band across the chest.

One of Mexicos biggest teams, the football team of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (the biggest Uni in the Americas in teams of students) have won six nacional titles, and are also well known for wearing some prettty outlandish kits as well, with the Puma logo in full view on the shirt, and I have don the same here (for the kits, there is no designated home and away kit)

In recent years, the team has played in a range of shades of gold as a clour, these kits use the full range, and are pretty much in your face as per usual for the Pumas. I used the old U logo, though looking back, I think that maybe I should have updated that logo.

Vélez Sársfield

From the district of Liniers in Buenos Aires (the most western in the City), Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield were founded by three men taking shelter in a railway station on January 1910, and named the club after the station.

The team had only won the title once before the 1990s, but Velez won the title for a second time in the 1993 Clausura (shirt of that year above), and a year later won the Copa Libertadores, Beating a Sao Paulo side that was expected to win a third straight title, and then beat AC Milan in the would club cup, led players such as Jose Chilavert and Omar Asad, all under the watchful eye of Carlos Bianchi. Under his reign, el Fortin added three more domestic Championships, and the noughties brought more success, with the most recent title coming in 2009

Kit wise, the team played in white shirts, before switching to a tricolour of green, white and red in honour of the Italian immigrants in the club ranks in 1914. In 1938, a merchant offed the club white shirts with a blue V on the front, colours they have worn to this day.

For the kits here, I decided to keep it retro looking, as Vélez have had modern kits for the past few seasons, and as it was the 100th year of the team, I kept it simple, and it has old sponsors (FILA and pirelli) i placed the crest and the logos to accentuate the chevon on the shirt. The blue is deep, and on the back of the shirt is the clubs nickname and that of the stadium. The Away follows the same design.

One of the Uruguayan big two, Club national de football are one of the biggest clubs in the world, with three wins in the copa libertadores and three world club championships, and the team has continued to dominate Uruguayan football along with the eternal rival, Penarol, from the same city of Montevideo. Next time you hear someone complain about the dominance of teams in England or Scottish leagues, tell them that between the advent of professionalism in the year 1932 until the year 1975, Nacional and Penarol were the only two champions of Uruguay. The teams colours were decided on after the merger of three clubs, and the team were the first in Uruguay to be formed by Uruguayan nationals. This is reflected in the colours of the team - red, white and blue, the colours of Jose Artigas the hero of the independence movement, and called the father of Uruguayan independence. His flag was blue with a white horizontal band and a diagonal stripe across the flag. the white blue and red is also the colour of the “liberty or death” flag that is often flown alongside the Artigas flag, and also the national flag itself (in fact, the Uruguayan side actually ran out in a shirt modelled on the Artigas flag, and the national team still play in red as the away kit) For a nation that is so small, Its amazing to think that two of the giants of world club football play in the capital of that country.

For the home, I wanted the shirt to look classy and clean, a less is more kind of shirt. The shirt has got the pocket on the shirt (a must have, considering the nickname of the team), a feature that has not featured on the shirt for a long time, but I think its overdue a long comeback, and the shirt has the red and blue trim on the back of the sleeves (an idea that I got from the Turkey euro 2008 shirt). I think that the Bolsos look best when the team play in white shirts, blue shorts and blue socks, but I designed the shorts for the home and the away to be interchangeable. The design of the shorts is a contrast to the design of the shirt, kind of less traditional to contrast with the shirt.

The away was influenced by this shirt by Arius85 http://www.footballshirtculture.com/football-kit-design/fantasy-kit-design/nacional-uruguay-artigas-third-1982.html, with this shirt that incorporates the Artigas flag. I decided to do my own version, but I wanted the shirt to have the Artigas flag looking like it was draped across the shirt. I like the idea of the Artigas flag on the shirt, as it looks pretty classy and in your face. The shorts and the socks are white, and there’s no sponsorship on the shirt, as it would have looked too cluttered. The angle of the two bands is tighter, to make it look like the flag is draped across the shirt and to give it more agression.
The third is in red. This almost has the same template as the home, and I designed it to be worn with blue shorts.

Barcelona

More than a club, FC Barcelona are one of the woulds biggest clubs, and are the current world club champions, and of Europe and Spain.

The kits here are pretty traditional, the home is in the colour scheme that Barca used in the late 1990's, and the away is based on the classic away with a diagonal chest band. On both the kits the crest is the one used in the 1920's but with the stripes fitting in with the colour scheme.

Vasco da Gama

One of Rio de Janeiros biggest teams, Vasco da Gama have won 22 State championships, 4 national titles and have won the Copa Libertadores. The team also won the first South American Club Championship in 1948 in Chile.

The kits here are pretty retro looking for the Gigante da Colina , with the band on the shirt and the Maltese Cross (the more elaborate badge is on the inside of the collar) The Logo on the front of the shirt is in greyscale to suit the shirt better on the kits with the MRV logo.

Tigre

From the Town of Tigre just north of Buenos Aires, Tigre were the suprise package of their debut season in the top flight. Having beat Nueva Chicago in a brutal playoff marred by violence to claim thier place in the top flight, the team suprised everyone by finishing second in the 2007 apertura, just four points off Lanus. A year later, El Matador finished level on points with Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo, and in the playoff, Tigre beat Boca, missing out on the championship by just one goal.

The older kits here are in the traditional Colours of the team, and with the current sponsors. The home is Blue with a red band all round the shirt, and as per usual when I do a team with a chest band, the socks are the same colour as the chest band. On the back of the shirt is the stylized Tigre crest.

The Away has no front sponsor to break the chestband, and also has the Tigre Logo on the back too.

Club Olimpia

Olimpia are the most successful team in Paraguay, having won 38 national titles, the Copa Libertadores three times, and the Intercontinental cup once. Home kit for the most successful team from Paraguay, this is a classic looking kit, with the black band going around the shirt. The stars above the crest are for the copa libertadores wins, and the gold star on the back is for the world club cup win. For both the home and the away kits, I did not want the hoop broken, so I came up with a solution, as you can see from the back of both the shirts.

Flamengo

From the city of Rio, Flamengo were founded in the Rio district of the same name, and here are my takes on shirts for the team. The home kits were influenced by the classic red and black kits of the 80s, when Zico was the star of the world club cup winning team, and there are two versions - the first is a classic version, the second uses a more modern template.

For the change, I decided on a hooped kit, and kept the sleeves white, with a chest band. I based the kit on an old change shirt from the 50s.

From the city of Porto Alegre, Internacional are one of Brazil's biggest clubs, having won three league titles, and in 2006, the double of the Copa Libertadores and the world club cup. For the kits here, I went for a classic look for the team. The home is pretty classic, and I used the original Inter crest on both the home and away, the Modern crest is on the inside of both shirts.

For the away, I based it on an old Inter away shirt, with a red diagonal stripe, broken to incorporate the Logo of the bank of Rio Grande de Sul.

Arsenal

Arsenal

London’s most successful club, Arsenal are 13 time champions of England, first coming to prominence under Herbert Chapman in the 1930s, which they dominated, and the team have been regular contenders for the English championship on a regular basis, and under the guidance of Arsene Wenger , the Team won the English Championship in 1998, and repeated the success in 2002, and in the 2003 - 2004 the side went though the 38 game league season unbeaten.

On the kits, Arsenal played in a Garibaldi red shirt with white shorts, before Chapman introduced the iconic red shirt with white sleeves in the 30s, and that has been the Arsenal shirt. The first major change came in 1992, when an ill advised remake of the adidas brand gave arsenal blue streaks on the shirt, and the following home kit change, nike introduced a kit that had mostly red sleeves and lighting shadow patterns on the shirt. The resulting kit was not popular, and Arsenal had little success in it. The following kit was a much more traditional kit, and in it, the club had a magnificent season, winning the English league and the cup.

The current kit has no white sleeves, just a streak on it, and there is a new colour on the home - Blackcurrant or deep red, supposedly the colour that Arsenal wore in the early days, but I think that the real reason it’s on there is due to the influence of one Stan Kroeke, his corporate colour and the colour of the home shirt of Colorado Rapids, the MLS franchise that he owns.http://historicalkits.co.uk/Arsenal/Arsenal.htm

With the major investment in soccer on this side of the pond by Americans increasing, I belive that they should really leave the colours of a team alone, especially if they are as iconic as Arsenals and not try to shoehorn a third colour on there. Arsenal never actually played in that shade of red until the 2007-08 away kit, very controversial as it was white.

On all the kits, the current, and in my view horrible crest has been replaced by the old cannon on the shirt, and on the back is the crest that was used in the 1930s, this looks good on a red or a navy shirt, but not so good on the yellow kit, which is why the socks on the yellow kit have the cannon and on the shirt, there is no old crest. Personally, I believe that the old cannon crest looks much better, as it is a symbol of the club, and Tottenham Hotspur set a trend that others should follow in 2006 when they reverted to a nice simple crest from the old crest with the club motto beneath the crest. More teams should follow this example. The old heraldic style Arsenal crest is on the inside of the collar.

The home kit is influenced by a few that I have seen on the FSC website, with my own touches on the shirt. I like the idea of trim that you can only see from the back or the sides of the shirt, and this has that on the back. The shirt also has shadow stripes.

The yellow kit is pretty straightforward, based on the away kit used in the 1970s and worn in the 1979 FA cup final against Manchester United.

The blue kit is based on a kit from 2000 that Arsenal wore just once, the kit was a lighter shade than the one you see here, and had blue collars. This one has red and white stripes down the side, and the collar and the cuffs are red and white. The shade of navy is a very deep one, darker than any that Arsenal have played in before.

Bolton

Bolton

One of the lesser lights of the premiership, the small town of Bolton, to the North of Manchester, has had a thriving premier league club since 2001, despite a few close scrapes with the drop into the second tier. The team have also played against the big boys as well, playing a style of football that is not always eye pleasing, but the results have been impressive. Financially the club do not have the spending power of the big Liverpool and Manchester clubs, so have to rely on journeymen footballers and Bosman signings.

For the two kits, I kept the local manufacturers of the Kit (reebok), but as I hate seeing betting shops on shirts, I put the logo of the local bakers on the shirt, nice wholesome sponsor, and I tried to make the shirts look like they were made by reebok, but with a new style and a verve lacking in the current crop of kits for Brazilian teams, the template used by FC Koln and Lens as well as the trotters, and the kits for the Australian A league. The one used on the shirts here was designed by steevo, there were others he designed
The home is pretty straightforward, with navy and red trim - I think they need a third colour on the shirt, as it adds a touch of aggression and makes the shirt distinct from Preston North End, another team from the North West of England that play in white shirts with Navy shorts.

The away is red with a Navy stripe on the shirt, any resemblance to the England shirt is coincidental, and it just came out that way.

The third is the same shade of purple that was worn by the team in the 1996-97 season

Apart from the retina searing colour, its pretty plain, but it’s the colour that stands out. Trotters diehards might quibble, but this is designed as a third, so it should be just the white and red being worn.

Valencia

Hey Everyone, its been a while, but its the summer, just hoping my team starts the new season well, first Home game at the weekend, and hopefully we will win and we will get a new owner and a new manager. And pigs might start flying over the Northeast of England too.

Today's team are Valencia Clube de Futbol, one of the most successful teams in Spain over the last two decades, and responsible for some of the best football seen in Europe at that time. The team that made it to the European cup final two years running was brilliant, and the current team is not too shabby either - hopefully they can keep it together in the face of tough financial times. The name on the back of the shirt is that of Mr VCF himself, Ruben Baraja.

The home has just one Kappa logo on the shirt, and its quite subtle, being the outline of the two naked bodies, and is disguised by the black band on the chest. I wanted it to be hidden, and it to be subtle, the opposite of most of the shirts that kappa have put out over the past six seasons. It also does not look like a typical kappa shirt as well, this was a deliberate decision that I took. On the logo, Kappa have been putting way too many logos on the shirts as of late. In my view they only need the one logo on the shirt, and I think that putting loads of sponsor logos on a shirt has the opposite effect to the one the makers have when they plaster the logo over the shirt, people stop taking notice of it. A nice discrete small logo might be, paradoxically, more effective in getting attention.

The sock hoops also follow the design of the shirt, with the band hiding the kappa logo, and accentuating the crest too.

The away is a remake of the Valencia flag kit that the team has had in the past. It might look like a jesters outfit to some, but there is no doubt its striking and unique, part of the reason it was chosen. The colours were picked off the flag of Valencia, for the gaudy result that you see here.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur.

Based in the North of London, at the north end of the seven sisters road, Tottenham Hotspur are one of England’s most famous and successful clubs, having won two league titles and eight FA cups in their 127 years of history. The team wear the same colours as the national team of England, and for the away kit, the colours are generally reversed. A ruling by the FA in the sixties saw an introduction of a yellow change kit, and generally, these are the colours of spurs. The decision to adopt the white shirts was in no small part due to the success of Preston North End, the pre-eminent team of the early years of the football league (one of the nicknames of Tottenham Hotspur is the London Lilywhites, the other and far more frequently used being Spurs). The team wore halved blue and white shirts, brown and gold stripes and red shirts before settling on the white shirts that the team has worn since.

Spurs were named after Hotspur, who were named after Sir Harry Hotspur, who rebelled against the crown in the middle ages. Spurs are one of the few clubs in England named after a historical figure. Over the years, the team has become famous for attacking and stylish football, and this is the ethos of the team and the way they play.

For the season 2009-10, the team have opted to replace a rather nice home kit with a eye wateringly horrible shirt that has huge amounts of yellow, and spurs fans have started a petition to get rid of it and bring in a new kit for the coming season. I’ve designed here kits that are more traditional and much nicer, but still modern and contempory kits.

For the kits, I have stuck with a white home kit, just two colours and the new badge, a slimmed down version of the cockerel that was on the shirts in the 50s, 60s, 70s and the eighties. The sponsor I have chosen is Holsten, a beer brand that sponsored the club between 1981-1995 and 1999-2003.

The home is mostly white, white collar, white cuffs and white socks, with two flashes on the side of the shirt in navy. There is little navy, for the reason that I wanted the shirts to look classy and the white is a symbol of heroism, so navy is used for the sponsors, the crest and the two flashes only. The shorts are navy, but white ones from the away can also be used so Spurs, in the event that they get into Europe, can wear an all white kit. The away is the same as the home, only with reversed colours.

Hope you like it. I know its not exactly cutting edge, but its Spurs and its white.

Colo - Colo

Colo - Colo are one of the biggest names in South American football, 28 times Champions of Chile, and organizers of the first South American Club Championship, precursor to the Copa Libertadores. This is the home kit for El Indio, Chiles most successful team. This has the black bar above the crest on the shirt and shorts (no Colo - Colo kit is complete without it) and on the socks, the black hoop on the turnover functions as the black bar over the crest, in honour of David Alfonso Arellano Moraga, who was one of the founders of Colo - Colo and some say the inventor of the Bicycle kick in football. The team was named after a Mapuche Indian Chief who fought against the Spanish and was never captured or defeated. This kit is my idea of the kit from 1996-98 and the kits from the seventies crossed together.

Its pretty difficult choosing the colour of a jersey. Sometimes you don’t even have a choice

Often, the colour of a teams jersey was not really a choice the team could make. In the early days, often teams had no choice but to adopt a new colour, and often a new identity as well, and for the side that is the subject of todays blog, that was not necessarily a bad thing, as it gave the team a new identity, and gave the team unique and instantly recognisable colours. The that I will talk though is the team from the capital of Peru, Universitario de Deportes of Lima. The team have won the most amount of championships in Peruvian football history, and have a huge fan base in Peru. The team contests classicos with Sporting Cristal (the team of the major brewery in Peru) and the team of the working class in Lima, Alianza. The team play in a colour scheme that is unique in world football, and they came across it by accident, an accident that has happened to all of us (as the shirt that I once had in my possession came about) U de D were due to play, and took delivery of their kit in the early years of their history. But there was a problem. The kitman had forgot to remove the crests from the shirts, and the red ran in the wash, turning the white shirts they had a cream colour. The managers could not get a new set of kits for the upcoming match, and Universitario had no choice but to play the match in the new cream shirts and shorts, completed with the black socks. Despite this setback, they won the match, and so came about one of the most beautiful colour schemes in world football. Since then, La U have always played in la crema y burgundia, with the away colours reversed. For the kits here, I tried to get a tailored vibe with the kit, and used the traditional colours of the team.

The collar is a traditional V neck, and the feature at the back more by accident than design, the way the collar is taller at the back of the neck than the front. The away is in the traditional colours of the team, and it also asymmetric trim, which I am a pretty big fan of, and on the right shirt it can look pretty good. This was also designed with the tailored look in mind, but not as retro as the Manchester city kit, the first club side to have kits designed with the new tailoring system of designing kits, though I’ve got a feeling that its shorthand for a classy retro kit in the umbro lexicon. I do like the home and the away kits that the citizens will wear this season, but I do think that having retro kits all the time is not really a good idea, as kit design could stagnate. But city have had in the last few seasons modern reebok and LCS kits, so a retro one is in order. U de Deportes have had in the last few season’s modern kits, so I think it might be time to go back to a more classic looking kit. This was the effect that I tried to go for in designing these kits.

This week, my home team lauched its new away kit. In the north east of England, the shirt has split opinion, due to the colour of the shirt. Newcastle fans hate it, due to the fact that it looks horrible, and our rivals Sunderland love the kit, for the same reason.

Just look at it.

Its the worst change kit that we have ever had, no doubt, it just looks awful. I mean, the colours just dont work, and the main colour - custard yellow - may be fiiting for some of the players who have beeen going though the motions, but this is just horrible, and its going to look awful on the terraces and on the road.

What were they thinking? Trust me, toon fans have been asking that for a long time now, and this is just another example of Newcastle being turned into a laughing stock. Yesterday, Newcastle lost 6-1 at Orient (team from North London) wearing this horror.

But it was not always like that. The toon have had some good change kits, and my favorite was the one worn in 1996 - 97, the "Denim" shirt, which I have happy memories of, not least because it was worn against Sunderland in the last ever North east Classico to be held at Roker. The toon won 2-1 in a match in which the away fans were banned.

this was made out of a cotton like weaved material, and it had the inbuilt scarf collar as well, so it was pretty comfortable. We palyed well in that kit in 1996-97, when the Toon finished second behind Manchester United.

The template was the same as the one used by Marseille and Anderlecht, but the colours and the sponsors made it look like a United kit, despite the toon never having worn a similar shade of blue before.

I used to have this shirt with the number 9

and the Name Shearer on the back that I picked up at an oxfam store, but I gave it to a friend you had to leave to go back to Japan after his work at the nissan factory stopped. It pained me to give it away, to be honest.

I have a theory that no matter how good a shirt is, in the end, the team in it has to make it a classic. In the end, beating Sunderland in the last north east derby makes this shirt a classic in my book.

Hello, Im MW, and I like designing football kits. it’s a hard thing to design a kit that is stylish, good looking and still has a history of the team, but that’s what I try to do, and put my heart and soul into the team.

Santos - one of the greatest teams in the history of game, in the 1960s, Santos were the team in Brazilian football, in South American football and world football. The team of that period were the greatest ever to come out of Sao Paulo state, perhaps the greatest to come out of Brazil, and perhaps the greatest club side in the history of football. And perhaps it is fitting that the team that played the most colourful football of the time, and was THE team to watch, played in the simplest and most elegant kits - almost literally all white. The all white look may have been associated with Real Madrid, but the all white, for the purity of the football suited the Peixe down to the ground. It was not a conscious decision to wear all white, in the early history of Santos, the team could no longer afford to wear blue, and adopted the all white for pragmatic reasons. In this decade, Santos have reached the final of the Copa libertadores, and won the Brazilian championship twice, showing signs of a revival. Sadly, while the team has shown signs of a revival, the kits have taken a turn for the worse

The kit that umbro gave to Santos this year, with the horrible looking grey and the ugly STI logos, is a shocker. Umbro have made some nice kits over the past year, but the shirt that the Peixe were given is the worst they have done this year. In my opinion, the “Tailored” look would have been much better, so I decided to make the kit all white, with the exception of the logos, and base the kit on the classic ones of the 60s. The swooping side panels I added to improve performance, and the shirt would be made out of the same material as the new England and Manchester City shirts.

Yes its all white, but does a team suit the all white look better than the team that played the greatest and most beautiful football in the 60s, and has been showing signs of a revival?

For the away, there was no choice but to do a shirt that was black and white, and I tried to make this as aggressive and purposeful as possible, with the swooping side panels and the black sleeves on the shirt, and the stripes on the shorts. It does not look as retro as the home, but the shirt still looks “Santos” and having two retro kits at once is a bit much.
